Ikebana (生け花) is the Japanese art of flower arrangement that dates back to the 15th century.  Ikebana emphasizes natural beauty of flower materials including the stems and leaves as well as the shapes, lines, and forms.  It expresses the beauty of flower materials using an asymmetric composition, empty space, and the principle of minimalism. Ikebana is also known as “kado” (華道) (the way of flowers), involving the spiritual practice of understanding nature, tranquility, harmony between all living things and oneself.

Each workshop introduces you to a different style of flower arrangement. This workshop will cover  Rikka (立花) or Tatehana. Advanced Students are recommended for Rikka. Workshops are held at the instructor's home in U-City (address and directions are emailed upon payment confirmation). Larger workshops are held in SSB 331 at UMSL.

Prices include flowers.

Tatehana is really fun and is appropriate for any level. It does not use kenzan. Instead, we use komiwara (plastic straws that resemble the rice straws). Komiwara is re-usable. After use, we wash, clean, and dry it. You will need a slim vase that meets the following specifications:

1) 7.5-9.5 inches tall (Should not exceed 10 inches)

2) 2.75-3.15 inches wide for the mouth

3) slim, cylinder shape

4) aquarium-sized stones if the vase is not cylindrical (small pebbles will have to be added to stabilize the komiwara)

Workshop fees include the flower materials, komiwara, wires, strings, and other supplies.

Online registration is not available for this event. Please email Dr. Chikako Usui by Friday, 12pm for reservation at Chikako@umsl.edu.
